Bridging Generations: Looking Back and Moving Forward

Ancient Greece is widely considered to be the birthplace of Western civilization. Its influence on modern society is immense, spanning a wide range of fields, including politics, philosophy, science, art, and architecture. Our new exhibition features some of the most prominent ancient thinkers -- visit the HMM to learn how their contributions continue to move us forward!

Pastoral Song

A sustainable system of agriculture - pastoral cultures have deep ties to the earth and animals. Transhumance shapes the relationship between people, animals, and ecosystems - creating a symbiotic culture. Transhumant herders have a deep knowledge of the environment and ecological balance. This exhibition celebrates the role that pastoral shepherding or transhumance has played in the lives, stories, and economy of the Hellenic peoples throughout the ages and even today.

sacred beauty

The icon is like a window which links heaven and earth. Icons occupy a very prominent place in Christian Orthodox worship and theology. The icon is not simply decorative, inspirational, or educational -   it signifies the presence of the individual depicted.  The HMM exhibition includes iconography on loan to the museum and many additional items from our permanent collection.
